The Ash Banner Companies

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Mercenary Brotherhood — Frontier Forts and Western Roads#

"Ash Banner men do not run. They also do not take void-contracts, they do not massacre civilians, and they charge frankly absurd rates for siegework. But they do not run." — garrison commander, Fort Aldric

The Ash Banner Companies are the most professionally disciplined mercenary force operating along the western frontier of the Aurelian Reach. Originating from the wreckage of three mid-collapse imperial road-garrison legions whose officers refused to disband, the Companies have spent a century building a reputation for contractual reliability, tactical competence, and a strictly enforced internal code that distinguishes them from the generality of post-collapse sell-swords. Their banner — grey ash-cross on a field of tarnished silver — flies from perhaps two dozen frontier forts and six permanent garrison-towns between the Leaking West and the Crestavar plateau.

The Companies provide road-guard services, siege engineering consultation, disciplined pike and crossbow formations, and what they term 'continuity garrison' — the maintenance of fortifications through ownership transitions, wars, and plague years without prejudice to whoever currently holds the deed. Their internal code prohibits void-tainted contracts (defined as any commission traceable to entities operating in or adjacent to the Voided Zone), civilian massacre, and the deliberate destruction of bridges, mills, or granaries. Violations result in company tribunals that have, on four recorded occasions, executed their own officers.

The Ash Banner's engineering division has become its most strategically valuable arm: siege-masters who understand pre-collapse fortification geometry can identify structural weaknesses in the old imperial defensive works now occupied by warlords and petty kings throughout the region. The Companies sell this knowledge to clients, but they maintain sealed copies of their own surveys — which means they also know how to take every fortress they have ever been paid to protect. This fact is not publicly advertised, but it is quietly understood by every lord who has offered them a garrison contract.
