The Ashen Collegium of Last Rites
Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.
Necromantic Fellowship — University Catacombs and Plague Towns#
"The corpse-lawyer found the missing codicil inside the deceased's memories. The court accepted it. I no longer feel certain about anything I have personally witnessed." — notary, Fellhaven probate court, 110 AR
The Ashen Collegium presents itself, and largely functions, as a learned society addressing genuine practical problems: the post-collapse proliferation of unresolved succession disputes, contested inheritances, and forensic mysteries where the only reliable witness is a corpse. Its corpse-lawyers — practitioners trained in both legal argument and the specific necromantic disciplines required to access post-mortem memory — provide services to probate courts, criminal tribunals, and private clients seeking resolution of disputes that living testimony cannot settle. Their work is regulated, licensed in eight jurisdictions, and genuinely valued by the magistracies that employ them.
The Collegium's research divisions operate under considerably less scrutiny. University catacombs provide access to the bodies of individuals who died in possession of historically significant knowledge: former imperial officials, archivists, census clerks, senior administrators whose memories contain information worth considerably more than their probate value. The Collegium maintains sealed archives of extracted memories covering the last decade of the Magnus Empire — a body of intelligence that includes tax records, property surveys, military deployment orders, and personal correspondence of senior officials that was never formally archived before the collapse.
The Collegium's most sensitive material concerns the forbidden imperial cadastres: the classified property registers that documented exactly who owned what in the provinces under direct imperial control at the moment of collapse. These records are the legal foundation for an unknown number of current noble claims — and the evidence that would invalidate a comparable number of others. The Collegium neither sells this information nor publicizes its possession of it. It uses it to ensure that particularly determined enemies of the institution encounter unexpected legal complications, and that its operating licenses are renewed without excessive examination of its catacomb research programs.
