The Bastion Hammers

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Mercenary Caste — Iron Heartland#

"They come back knowing how other people do things. The Heartland has never quite decided what to do about that." — Twelve Anvils coalition observer

The Bastion Hammers are not a single company but a recognized caste of veteran heavy infantry whose legal standing is codified under Iron-Bound successor law: they may be leased to foreign employers for a defined term, fight under that employer's banner, and return with their pension rights intact. The encampments along every major roadhead serve as processing and mustering points where companies are assembled, contracts are vetted by Heartland-appointed brokers, and veterans between terms can find work on local garrison details. The system exports excellent soldiers and a steady stream of foreign coin.

The complications are well understood and consistently ignored by policy-makers. Hammers who serve long foreign terms return with habits, loyalties, and tactical knowledge acquired from traditions that often contradict Heartland doctrine. Some come back with foreign wives, foreign gods, and a pointed unwillingness to defer to fortress houses that never left home. The caste veterans' councils, which nominally handle pension disputes, have quietly become political bodies where returned Hammers air grievances that cannot safely be voiced in the official clan assemblies.

Several returned Hammer companies have, over the past three decades, shifted from garrison work into something closer to private political enforcement. They do not call themselves armies. They are, legally, employed. Adventurers seeking heavy support in the Heartland will find Hammers available at transparent rates; adventurers who press too hard on what those companies are actually being retained for tend to receive polite but very final discouragement.
