The Collegium of Broken Measures

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Arcane Society — Imperial Observatories and Salvage Law Schools#

"They found a working calibration rod in the Mircevet ruins and spent three days arguing about which of them had jurisdiction over it. The ward they accidentally triggered had considerably less patience for the debate than they did." — salvage broker, Crestavar

The Collegium of Broken Measures gathers the Reach's surviving practitioners of what it calls calibrated knowledge: surveyors who can still read imperial triangulation monuments, astrologers who maintain the pre-collapse celestial tables, jurist-magi who understand the enchantment protocols embedded in imperial administrative law. The name is simultaneously a lament and a project statement — the empire's measurement systems were unified, precise, and irreplaceable, and nearly all of them broke when the administrative apparatus that maintained them dissolved. The Collegium exists to recover, verify, and where possible restore what can be saved.

Its members operate from repurposed observatory towers and sealed archive-vaults, conducting expeditions into ruin-sites to recover instruments, survey markers, and legal codices. Their work is genuinely valuable: accurate maps, functioning astrological calendars, and verified weights-and-measures standards are worth considerable sums to merchants, administrators, and military commanders throughout the Reach. The Collegium licenses its surveys and sells certified copies of recovered legal codes, using the income to fund further expeditions into progressively more dangerous ruins.

The danger is structural rather than intentional. Imperial administrative buildings were heavily warded — not against thieves, but against unauthorized modification of the records they contained. When Collegium surveyors attempt to remove, copy, or even accurately read certain categories of enchanted document, they trigger security responses calibrated for an enforcement apparatus that no longer exists. These awakened wards do not know the empire has fallen. Several Collegium expeditions have returned missing members, and at least two observatory sites have been placed under indefinite quarantine after the instruments inside began operating autonomously.
