The Custodians of the Ninth Seal

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Ruin-Law Society — Voided Zone#

"They told the Kaventhi investors the vault must remain closed. The investors laughed and broke the seals anyway. That was eleven years ago. No one laughs about it now." — Voided Zone port administrator

The Custodians of the Ninth Seal emerged from the wreckage of Magnus-era administrative law, tasked originally with inventorying sealed imperial substructures throughout the island chains. Over a century of hard lessons, their mandate narrowed to a single brutal principle: certain complexes must never be opened, regardless of the treasure, knowledge, or political leverage they might contain. The Custodians enforce this with legal instruments, physical seals, and when necessary, violence.

Their archivists embed themselves inside functioning ruins, cataloguing what remains intact and classifying threat tiers from inert to catastrophic. The society maintains fortified reading rooms in several major Voided Zone ports, where their classification records are kept under armed guard. They issue public injunctions against specific sites, partner reluctantly with sympathetic governors, and maintain a small cadre of enforcers trained specifically to re-seal what overconfident salvagers have cracked open.

The Custodians are frequently mocked as obstructionist fanatics standing between progress and profit. Their counter-argument is the public record: a list, updated regularly, of vaults that were opened against their counsel and what subsequently emerged. Adventurers find them humorless employers who pay well and brief thoroughly, but who will terminate any contract — and the contractor — if a sealed door is touched without authorization.
