The Dust Lances
Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.
Mercenary Tumen — Khavari Khanates#
"A Dust Lance veteran rides like a god and spends like a merchant-prince. What he votes like, once he is home and rich enough to matter, is a more complicated question." — Khavari confederation census official
When the Khavari confederation's internal politics make large-scale raiding inconvenient, the Dust Lances provide an outlet for several thousand professional cavalry and their accumulated aggression. They accept contracts from foreign rulers who need mobile shock troops and are willing to pay in hard coin, good pasture grants, and the kind of detailed combat experience no steppe-internal war can match. The tumen is organized along traditional decimal lines but commanded by elected officers who answer to contract terms rather than clan seniority, which produces unusual tactical flexibility.
Foreign service has made the Dust Lances materially wealthy by Khavari standards — their veterans return with Pasharan steel, Akeshi optical instruments, and engineering knowledge acquired while besieging city walls. The tumen maintains a field library of siege and fortification manuals collected over sixty years of campaigns, which is simultaneously the most foreign object and the most useful one on the steppe. Competing khans seek to recruit Dust Lance veterans into their personal guard with expensive offers, an ambition the tumen actively discourages to preserve its collective independence.
The danger the Dust Lances represent to steppe order is visible in every veteran's eyes: men who have spent years under foreign banners, been paid fairly, and eaten well develop expectations about governance that the khanates do not naturally satisfy. The tumen has not yet acted on those expectations politically. Observers with long memories note that every time outside rulers have tried to use the Dust Lances to destabilize the khanates from within, the tumen has declined. They are not idealists; they are investors who understand that the steppe is the only home they cannot replace.
