The Iron Grapnel
Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.
Salvage Brotherhood — Voided Zone#
"They swear an oath never to open the sealed vaults. They will tell you this with great sincerity while lowering themselves through a hole they just made in a vault wall." — Ash-Port Assembly harbor master
The ruined harbor districts of the Voided Zone's outer islands hold more recoverable material than any active quarry on the mainland. Pre-collapse Magnus construction used alloys and stone-working techniques that have not been replicated in one hundred and seventeen years; a single intact colonnade, carefully dismantled, provides enough engineered stone for a small city's reconstruction. The Iron Grapnel is the brotherhood that does this work — brutal, skilled, and entirely indispensable to every rebuilding project in the surrounding states that has happened since the collapse.
The brotherhood's internal discipline is organized around site claim law — a system of salvage rights more precise than most national property codes, enforced through collective violence against claim-jumpers. Their divers, structural engineers, and extraction crews work the island ruins on rotation, moving inward from the safer outer margins as hardened veterans replace raw recruits. The inner islands, where the Voiding's residual effects are strongest, are worked only by men who have been doing this for decades and have developed a practical taxonomy of what to avoid and what can be safely extracted.
The oath not to open certain vaults is real, sworn on brotherhood blood, and enforced through internal discipline that includes execution. It is also, demonstrably, not absolute. The brotherhood's own records document at least three 'accidental' vault breaches in the past twenty years, each followed by a period of unusual losses and a formal collective reaffirmation of the oath. What was found in those vaults is not recorded. What the survivors brought back — in terms of changed behavior, new research commissions placed through intermediaries, and an increased interest in Peacock Archive theological texts — is considerably more suggestive.
