The Lanterns of the First Tide

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Exiled Elder Remnant — Sea Caves and Drowned Libraries#

"They have been here longer than the empire. They will be here after us. What they want is not power but recognition that they were here first, and they are willing to be patient about it in ways that should concern you." — Azure Isles harbor commissioner

The Lanterns of the First Tide are the surviving remnant of a pre-Magnus maritime civilization whose coastal cities were drowned, shattered, or assimilated during the empire's expansion centuries before the collapse. They refused then and refuse now both extinction and full assimilation, maintaining their identity in sea caves, drowned library complexes accessible only by diving, and hidden island cloisters known only to initiated navigators. Their population is small, their institutional memory is exceptional, and their patience is calibrated in centuries rather than lifetimes.

The Lanterns' primary activity is the recovery and preservation of their own cultural record from drowned sites, cross-referenced with surviving Magnus survey data that occasionally reveals pre-imperial structures the empire itself only partially understood. Their navigational knowledge of deep coastal geography, tidal patterns, and submerged hazards surpasses anything produced since their civilization's submergence. They trade this knowledge selectively, preferring parties who can provide access to specific drowned sites over those who simply offer money.

The Lanterns' long-term project is testing whether the shattered coastlines of the post-collapse world could shelter a reborn sea-order — not as recovery of what was lost but as construction of something new on foundations only they remember. Adventurers who reach their hidden cloisters typically arrive through accident or invitation, and in either case find an organization that knows everything about them already, having maintained surveillance on all approaches for longer than the adventurers have been alive.
