The Pallid Wayhouses

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Necromantic Whisper Cult — Pilgrim Routes and Plague Cemeteries#

"The wayhouse keeper was very kind. She explained the theology with patience and genuine compassion. I thanked her and left before morning, because the theology was very specifically about what happens to unclaimed bodies in times of high demand." — pilgrim account, recovered from a Road of Falling Stars logbook

The Pallid Wayhouses are a missionary underworld cult operating through the grief infrastructure of the post-collapse world: wayhouses on plague routes, memorial shrines in mass-grave districts, and quiet presences in hospitals serving populations with no other spiritual support. Their theology promises continuity beyond death not as metaphysical reward but as practical arrangement — the dead can be retained, consulted, and employed if the correct relationships are established before mortality intervenes. They recruit among the bereaved, the terminally ill, and communities that have lost too many people to conventional funerary rite.

Softer chapters provide genuine pastoral comfort: grief counseling, memorial maintenance, and the specific solace of telling a dying person that their accumulated knowledge and relationships need not end with their body. Harder chapters infiltrate provincial governments, position members in mortuary and census offices, and prepare the administrative groundwork for governance transitions in which the dead participate in decisions. Several small communities in plague-ravaged border regions have already made this transition, presenting remarkable stability statistics that the Wayhouses use as recruitment literature.

Adventurers encounter the Wayhouses most often in recently afflicted regions where the organization has moved in behind a disaster and established deep community relationships before the outside world noticed. By the time anyone has reason to investigate, the Wayhouses have already become essential. What they find beneath the compassionate surface is an organization whose definition of 'community welfare' extends well past the boundary most people draw at the grave.
