The Peacock Archive

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Scholar-Sorcerer College — Pashara#

"Brilliant, vain, indispensable, and constitutionally incapable of agreeing with anyone who shares their discipline. The empire would function better with two of them, if they did not immediately attempt to destroy each other." — Pasharan grand vizier, private record

The Peacock Archive is Pashara's premier institution for the synthesis of astrology, jurisprudence, and ritual mathematics — three fields that, in Pasharan administrative tradition, are understood as aspects of a single governing science. Its scholars calculate auspicious dates for treaties, produce the canonical legal commentaries that underpin taxation law, and perform the celestial certifications that legitimize new satrapal appointments. Without the Archive's seal, a satrap's commission is technically provisional. The Archive knows this and charges accordingly.

The college is organized into chairs — twelve senior positions whose holders control curriculum, examination, and access to the deep archive. Competition for chairs is relentless, conducted through scholarship, calculated slander, and occasionally genuine magical contest. Current chair-holders have typically survived fifteen to thirty years of institutional warfare and arrived at their positions with an acute sense of which colleagues are threats and which can be used as shields. The Archive's external reputation for dispassionate scholarship is a performance of considerable sophistication.

The deep archive holds pre-collapse Magnus texts on celestial mechanics, administrative sorcery, and legal philosophy that no current scholar fully understands. The chair-holders disagree violently about how to approach this material — whether to publish, restrict, apply practically, or use as leverage against rivals. Adventurers recruited to retrieve specific texts from external sources enter an environment where their patron's colleagues may want the retrieval to fail, which makes understanding the Archive's internal politics a matter of professional survival.
