The Prism Athanor
Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.
Mage-Craft Society — Akesh#
"There is a valley three days east of Veyr al-Nur where the sand has been fused into glass for as far as you can see. No one will say when this happened. The Prism Athanor does not accept visitors." — Lantern Scale route captain's notes
The Akeshi solar climate is a resource the Prism Athanor has spent a century learning to exploit. Their glassworks produce optical instruments of extraordinary precision; their alchemical courts synthesize mineral compounds using concentrated-light techniques that require the specific solar intensity of the Akeshi interior. Both industries are strategically significant — their siege-optics have changed artillery ranging across the known world, and several of their mineral processes produce materials with no known equivalent. The society operates under Crucible charter but maintains a degree of practical autonomy that the Crucible finds uncomfortable and cannot easily revoke.
The Athanor's weapons research is rarely discussed in public and extensively discussed in private, by every military power with access to intelligence about it. Concentrated-light focusing, thermal lancing, and the production of substances that accelerate combustion in ways inconsistent with natural chemistry have all been documented in recovered experimental notes. Some of these experiments have gone visibly wrong — the glass valley is the best-known result, but local nomads report several smaller sites where desert terrain has been permanently altered in ways that suggest something was tested and did not perform as expected.
The society is organized around a grandmaster and eleven practitioners of senior standing who share access to the inner laboratory complex. Junior members — apprentices, technical staff, mineral surveyors — have no access to the full research program and are frequently unaware of what projects their senior colleagues are running. Adventurers who encounter Athanor field expeditions collecting mineral samples in remote terrain are dealing with junior staff on supply missions; what they are supplying is a separate question, and a more dangerous one.
