The Quiet Verse

Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.

Assassin-Skald Order — Vorngard#

"They sang his eulogy before the cup was cold. I did not know until later that they had written it beforehand." — Chieftain's widow, Greyfjord

Skalds in Vorngard preserve the sagas — the living record that determines a clan's worth across generations. The Quiet Verse holds that a skald who merely remembers is only half a craftsman; the other half is editing. When a figure in the saga has become a corruption — a coward claiming a hero's legacy, a betrayer whose crimes are being forgotten — the order acts. Their killings are timed, public where useful, and always followed by a revised verse that makes the death feel inevitable to history.

Members train for years in both lethal chemistry and formal poetic meter. Their poisons are blended to produce deaths consistent with natural ailments common to seafarers: cold-water fever, whale-gut sickness, storm exhaustion. The verse that memorializes the victim is composed before the act and delivered at the funerary pyre by someone who attended the feast the night before, smiling. Commissions are accepted only from patrons who can argue the case in saga-law terms; the order is not a common knife-for-hire.

The Quiet Verse maintains scattered archives of unfinished sagas — accounts of living figures whose stories have not yet resolved. These half-written scrolls are both research and threat. Adventurers who cross into Vorngard politics sometimes discover a verse has already been started about them, which the order will offer to resolve favorably for the right consideration. Those who refuse to negotiate may find the ending written for them.
