The Sable Rose Courts
Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.
Vampire Court — Hill-Palaces and Vineyard Keeps#
"The vintner sold the estate to settle debts. The new landlord does not drink wine. Draw whatever conclusions you feel are appropriate." — merchant factor, southern Reach, 109 AR
The Sable Rose Courts are the oldest continuous noble institution in the southern Aurelian Reach, predating the Magnus Empire by at least three centuries and surviving its collapse with a composure that genealogists have since found deeply suspicious. Publicly, the Courts are a confraternity of archival patrons and etiquette arbiters: they fund manuscript preservation, sponsor academies of heraldry and courtly protocol, and adjudicate matters of precedence between the lesser noble houses with an authority born from the simple fact that no one alive remembers a time when the Courts did not exist.
The Courts' actual economy is considerably more direct. Member estates control the grain warehouses and water rights for extensive areas of the southern plateau. When famine threatens — as it does with reliable frequency following the engineered disruptions the Courts privately arrange — affected communities accept emergency assistance in the form of structured debt against future harvests and labor obligations. Within two generations, entire county populations exist in conditions of contractual dependency that the Courts' lawyers can construct, and a magistrate of their choosing will enforce, as a form of feudal tenure. The blood-tithe is rarely literally extracted; its economic analog suffices.
The Courts maintain cordial relations with the Pale Laurel Houses and several of the Nine Bell Republics, each of whom believes they are using the Courts rather than being used by them. The Courts also maintain an extensive network of human agents — called Thorns — who perform daylight operations, carry correspondence, and occasionally disappear competing operatives. Adventurers hired to investigate 'irregular tenancy disputes' in the southern plateau frequently find themselves examining paperwork that is technically legal, functionally horrifying, and backed by something old enough to find their swords amusing.
