Barbarian Sea-Land Clans — Storm Coasts and Megalith Valleys#
"They raid us in autumn and trade with us in spring and swear oath-service in summer and we have been doing this for four generations. The arrangement is not comfortable but it is comprehensible, which is more than can be said for most of our neighbors." — Reach coastal town alderman
The Stonehowl Kin are a confederation of hard frontier clans occupying the storm coasts, upland steads, and megalith valleys at the margins of settled regions. They move between raiding, trading, and seasonal oath-service according to a calendar logic that looks arbitrary to outsiders but reflects sophisticated management of clan resources, kinship obligations, and the rhythmic economic opportunities presented by settled neighbors. Their material culture is deliberately spare; their social institutions — kin law, hostage customs, guest-right, blood-price schedules — are elaborate and rigorously enforced.
Stonehowl memory culture preserves detailed knowledge of roads, passes, and coastal features predating the Magnus Empire. Their megalith sites are navigation and meeting-point markers whose full function even clan elders no longer completely understand. This geographic knowledge has commercial value to surveyors, military planners, and merchant houses willing to negotiate respectfully rather than demand. Hostage exchange between clans and between clans and settled states is the primary diplomatic mechanism; a Stonehowl hostage in a city court is a negotiating asset, not a prisoner.
Adventurers who encounter Stonehowl raiding parties at the wrong moment experience them as a serious military problem. Those who encounter them at a trading stead or approach a megalith site with recognized diplomatic gestures find an entirely different experience: blunt courtesy, excellent food, extraordinary geographic knowledge freely offered to confirmed guests, and permanent hostility toward anyone who subsequently betrays the hospitality extended.
