Erastyr
Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.
Portfolio and Common Titles#
Erastyr governs hearth, bow, village continuity, family obligation, local custom, practical harvest, fences, wells, and the stubborn dignity of small communities. His titles include Old Deadeye, Father of the Hearth Road, the Bow at the Door, and Keeper of the Village Bell. His symbols are antlers, bows, hearth hooks, seed baskets, boundary stones, and smoke rising from a roof that has not been abandoned.
Historical and Theological Profile#
Erastyrian theology rarely cares whether imperial scholars call a god emergent or primordial. To his worshipers, a god who keeps children fed and graves remembered is real enough. Historically, Erastyr grew from the compact between settled survival and local memory. He is older in practice than many cities, but his cults become legible in written history through village law codes, harvest songs, hunting taboos, and household ancestor rites. He was never fully absorbed by the Magnus Empire, which respected his usefulness while finding his local loyalties inconvenient.
Role in the Serathi War#
Erastyr's Serathi memory belongs to farms emptied for siege grain, orchards cut for chariot axles, sons drafted into wall watches, and households made hostage to heroic pride. Serathi Compact villages prayed to him to keep fields alive while their prince held the gates. His priests later argued that the war proved a simple point every palace forgot: a city defended at the cost of every household has already begun to fall.
Institutions, Clergy, and Rites#
Erastyrian clergy are village priests, midwives, bow teachers, boundary keepers, feud mediators, well blessers, and protectors of custom. Temples are often indistinguishable from meeting halls or large hearth houses. Rites include the Stringing of Bows before winter, the First Loaf, the Fence Walk, and the Naming of New Households. His priests value marriage, adoption, practical repair, shared labor, and honest suspicion of outsiders who promise too much abstraction.
Regional Expressions#
Erastyr is strong in the Reach uplands, Heartland villages, Spine terraces, halfling communes, and frontier farm belts. Iron-Bound communities often honor him alongside Torren and Valtar where veteran grants become permanent villages. In the Ruinmarch Border, Erastyrian rites focus on resettlement, wolf warning, and the respectful naming of abandoned fields. Pashara and Akesh know him in oasis villages and orchard towns, though their urban elites rarely center him. Khavari pastoralists sometimes recognize similar hearth-and-herd powers but seldom name them Erastyr.
Conflicts and Heresies#
Erastyr conflicts with Calyra, Caedon, and Milanya when their liberating energies threaten household stability; he conflicts with Asmodai and Umbra Magni when order becomes remote exploitation. He is not a god of ignorance, but he is suspicious of forbidden scholarship that endangers the living for the sake of dead questions. The First Silence matters less to him than whether the roof leaks. Such traditions surface in accounts of village feuds, resettlement of haunted land, local saints, marriage politics, harvest curses, and the hard moral fact that community can protect and imprison at the same time.
