The Voided Zone and the Shattered Isles
Public lore preserves the setting's disagreements and uncertain histories.
The Capital Wound in Geographic Terms#
The most common cartographic mistake is to treat the Voided Zone as though it swallowed the entire central sea. It did not. The catastrophe was localized but profound. The old capital region, situated in the middle of the central southern peninsula, broke apart into an archipelago of civic fragments, reef chains, drowned districts, monastery refuges, scavenger towers, and warped causeways now known collectively as the Shattered Isles. The same event also obliterated the Iron-Bound assault host and much of its senior leadership, which is why later Iron-Bound rule across the west hardened into rival marches, successor houses, and competing claims rather than a single uncontested imperial replacement. Around and beyond that archipelago the greater sea remains broad, commercial, and strategically decisive.
Navigation and Fear#
The outer waters around the Shattered Isles remain usable to experienced pilots, though even there currents, fogs, and rumor shape routes. The inner wound does not behave like weather. It is treated as a legal and religious exception by nearly all maritime powers. Smugglers, relic divers, exiles, saints, and fools are drawn toward it for different reasons. Every major court keeps maps of the outer passages. No two inner maps agree.
The Voided Zone is a localized maritime wound at the center of the central southern peninsula, created during the Sack of Magnus Prime when desperate archons activated a forbidden failsafe in the metaphysical foundations of the western capital. Around it lie the Shattered Isles: not natural islands, but fragments of a broken capital region - drowned districts, shattered causeways, warped civic islands, monastery refuges, scavenger forts, ghost-haunted marble reefs, and unstable shoals around a wound in space. The detonation also consumed the invading Iron-Bound army gathered around the city, including the king and much of the upper leadership, leaving the wider conquest leaderless and helping fracture Iron-Bound power into the rival branches, marches, and successor polities that define the post-imperial age.
This is one of the most important geographic truths of the age. The broader sea remains large and traversable, like a great inner sea still binding the civilized world. The Voided Zone is not the whole sea. It is a localized horror within it.
